1816–1864 | christened John George Lang; grew up in Sydney and attended Cape’s School and Sydney College; moved to England in Mar. 1837; entered but soon left Trinity College of the University of Cambridge; studied law in the Middle Temple in London and was called to the bar May 28, 1841, aged 25; married Lucy Peterson in 1839 and returned to Australia in 1841; practiced law and wrote novels; moved to Calcutta, India, by 1845; and in 1853, moved to England, where he wrote novels under his own name; d. 1864
