Originally trained as an adolescent psychiatrist and worked at the Tavistock and Portman Gender Identity Development Service in London during his higher training. He is a qualified psychosexual therapist as well as a systemic and interpersonal psychotherapist. Honorary Professor at Loughborough University and he has a clinical and academic interest in the fields of gender, body image, eating problems and exercise. Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
