Hier machte er sich vor allem als Lutherforscher einen Namen, unter anderem als Herausgeber des Lutherjahrbuchs von 1957 bis 1972, behandelte aber auch andere Themen der Reformationsgeschichte und der deutschen Kirchengeschichte. Ehrenamtlich war er daneben unter anderem von 1952 bis 1971 als Präsident des Gustav-Adolf-Werks und von 1957 bis 1972 als Domdechant des Hochstifts Meißen tätig.
