Kunze ging 1978 in den Ruhestand und legte alle Ämter nieder. Neben der Förderung der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur der DDR machte sich Kunze vor allem als Herausgeber des Gesamtwerkes von Werner Klemke verdient.
