Von 1985 bis 1992 war er anschließend selbständig als freier Journalist, Publizist und Autor (für Printmedien, Hörfunk und Fernsehen) sowie als Regisseur/Realisator und Fernsehfilmproduzent tätig. In den Jahren 1992 bis 1996 arbeitete er am Studiengang „Journalisten-Weiterbildung“ an der FU Berlin als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und beschäftigt sich seitdem auch wissenschaftlich mit Medien. 1997 promovierte er zum Dr. phil. Zwischen 1997 und 2000 arbeitete Prof. Dr. Ludwig als freischaffender Medien-, Kommunikations- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftler. Seit dem Sommersemester 2000 ist er Professor an der Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg (Fakultät Design - Medien - Information) und ist zuständig für die Fächer Medienbetriebswirtschaftslehre, (Medien-) Management, Technikfolgen/Kommunikationstheorie, Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten/Expertenseminare, sowie Redaktionsarbeit und Redaktionsorganisation.
